Pottery on the Hill

NOVEMBER 2-4, 2018

Seventeen of the nation’s top ceramic artists gather for a pottery show focusing on functional pottery in the heart of Washington, DC. The ticketed preview reception offers collectors and fans the first chance to see and purchase the work of these esteemed artists, as well as receive a free, collectable tasting cup made by one of the potters. The free show and sale on Saturday and Sunday offer the chance to browse works and spend time getting to know the artists. The laid back, casual environment lends itself to conversations about the art and process behind it. For more information visit http://www.hillcenterdc.org/artist/pottery-on-the-hill/

Vessel: Form and Pattern

Alfred University School of Art and Design

Instructor: Kate Johnston
July 9 – 20, 2018
Workshop Fee: $850, Material Fee: $75

Workshop Description: This 2-week workshop is open to all skill levels. During this workshop we will explore form and surface through thrown vessels and pattern making. Introductory wheel throwing techniques will include basic forming and constructing with thrown parts. The class will discuss how to approach a pot for decoration using engobes and atmospheric firing. Students will develop their own surface patterns and learn techniques to execute their specific ideas. Each student will chose a subject of interest and then develop motifs and patterns through drawing. We will be working with stoneware clay and single-firing small work in high temperature atmospheric kilns. The second week we will add a colored slip palette and focus on every student finding a voice in surface decoration. For more information or to signup, please follow the link below.
